COVID-19 Realities

Austin parents, we have had a hard past few months and it doesn’t look like things are going to get much easier. After 4+ months of quarantine (to greater or lesser degrees), COVID rates in Texas are skyrocketing, and city, county, and state officials are considering a return to lockdown to prevent the ongoing spread. Having juggled online schooling, work, and childcare during the spring semester, it seems we will be back at it come fall. On July 14th, the City of Austin and Travis County enacted a joint order banning in-person classes for all schools through September 7th. What this means is that all students in the affected districts will shift to remote learning again, for at least the first three weeks of school, including students in the Austin Independent School District (AISD), Del Valle ISD, Eanes ISD, Lago Vista ISD, Lake Travis ISD, Manor ISD, Pflugerville ISD, and all other public school districts in the city limits and county of Travis. It is unclear what will happen beyond September 7th. If COVID has taught us anything, it is to not try to look too hard into the future as things are always changing. While I don’t want to be “gloom and doom”, it is important to acknowledge that this situation poses immense hardships for all parents, but particularly for working parents.

This post, therefore, is focused on rounding up a variety of alternative schooling options for the fall that parents can consider, whether temporarily (until in-person schooling starts again) or for the full fall semester and potentially longer. Options include a discussion of and resources on homeschooling; pod-type learning environments; nannies/tutors; small, private preschools or kindergarten programs; and YMCA child care for essential workers (a good option for the fall if your children are not yet of school age or if you need some summer childcare).

Homeschooling

If you are interested in exploring homeschooling for your child, I have included a few well-known and respected secular curriculums below, as well as information about Texas homeschooling requirements. In addition, I have included some additional national, state, and local homeschooling resources as well.

Homeschooling in Texas

The Coalition for Responsible Home Education is a national organization which “empowers homeschooled children by educating the public and advocating for child-centered, evidence-based policy and practices for families and professionals.” The organization lists homeschooling requirements by state and notes that in Texas parents must meet the following criteria to homeschool their children:

  • Parents may operate a homeschool as a private school. Parents must provide instruction in good citizenship, math, reading, spelling, and grammar. There are no notification, parent qualification, instruction time, bookkeeping, or assessment requirements.

  • What if you want to reenroll your child in public school after a period of homeschooling? According to The Classroom, as homeschooling is widely accepted in Texas, transferring to public school is straightforward. Each school district in Texas sets its own guidelines about this procedure. You will need to contact the school district you plan to enter to find out its requirements.

Withdrawing from public school, Curriculum Requirements, & curriculum suggestions

According to the Texas Homeschool Coalition, the state organization for homeschooling, which works to “promote understanding and acceptance of home education, protect and advance parental rights, and encourage and assist homeschoolers”:

  • Parents will need to withdraw their children from public school. Form here for current Texas public school students.

  • The only requirements in Texas for homeschooling to be legal are that (1) the instruction be bona fide (i.e., not a sham); (2) the curriculum be in visual form (e.g. books, workbooks, video monitor); and (3) the curriculum include the basic subjects of reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics and good citizenship. Parents may obtain curriculum materials from outside sources or develop their own.

Please note that there are hundreds of curriculum from which to choose in homeschooling your child. As curriculum selection is a very personal and subjective choice, the curriculums below are offered as suggestions to get you started on your curriculum explorations. Please note that some parents do not use an “out of the box” curriculum, but rather pull from a variety of learning resources, both of which are acceptable under Texas homeschooling rules. As the Texas Homeschool Coalition notes, homeschool parents are free to choose curriculum that best meets the needs of their student while satisfying the requirements of the law (homeschool curriculum does not have to be approved by the state because homeschools are private schools).

Additional Resources

Pod-Style Learning Group Resources

Some parents are banding together to create pod-style learning groups of similarly aged children who are participating in their local school’s remote learning program. In some cases, parents are trading off the facilitation of schooling. In other cases, parents are bringing in a tutor or babysitter to facilitate the online learning process. If you have a pod and are simply looking for a location to hold your school group or a teacher to support your school group or if you need help forming a pod, please see the resources below. I have also included information on the ChampionsTX-WAYA Academic Support Program for AISD remote learning students (K-2nd grades).

Care Crew will match each learning crew with a highly qualified educator. Learning crews are able to establish what kind of learning at home assistance they would like to receive: Remote Learning Facilitator or Private Tutor (similar to a Homeschool model). Either can be full-time, part-time, or hourly. Rates and expectations are established independently between crews and their educator. Care Crew is currently working on a partnership with a local placement agency who will work with you directly to find a highly qualified educator or facilitator.
