Happy March! I absolutely love Austin in the Spring. Get out there and enjoy our beautiful city with your family. Enriched Family's March 2020 Activities List has you covered with all sorts of fun ideas. As always, our monthly roundup of kids’ and family activities focuses on educational, cultural, and artistic delights in our community, with a special emphasis on both free and fee-based events.

A quick list of some of the free events this month include a number of summer camp and school fairs; Spanish demo classes at Mi Casa Es Tu Casa; Starry Nights at Girlstart; Explore UT; Career Fair for the Future; a Spring Family Film Series at the Domain Northside; a book signing & talk at BookPeople by the Dork Diaries series author and illustrator; UMLAUF’s Family Day; Laguna Gloria’s Second Saturdays are for Families; Creative Action Color Squad Community Paint Day; and the ABC Kite Fest.

Fee-based activities include the Sherwood Forest Faire; donation-based lactation support groups; a variety of craft and sewing workshops for kids and adults at Beehive Craft Studio; Science Mill Homeschool Day; Asian American Teen Career Day; a postpartum group hosted by Austin Doula Care & Lillian June Wellness; CPR, First Aid & AED Training; family-friendly events at The Hive; a variety of fun activities at Toybrary Austin; and a Drama-Free Discipline online workshop for parents. Finally, you could also enjoy a kid-friendly museum opening or performance at a number of venues around town. As always, this list is not exhaustive, but includes a sampling of events and activities that caught my eye that I wanted to highlight. For ease of perusal, activities are organized by date of event in each section (beginning of the month at top to later in month at bottom of each section).

Family Resource Highlight: Bright & Quirky Child Summit

Details: Is a child in your life twice exceptional? Make life better for bright kids with ADHD, Autism, Anxiety or learning differences by checking out this free, online summit. Bright and Quirky kids are also called twice exceptional or 2e because they have both advanced abilities and lagging abilities at the same time. These are two exceptions to the norm. That's why they're so complex. World-class psychologists, educators, and child development experts share tools and insights to help bright & quirky kids thrive.

Details: Join in for the 4th Annual West Austin Chamber of Commerce Summer Camp Fair! To find out what is available for your kiddos this summer, they are bringing businesses and residents together for this fun and free community event! Enjoy a FREE Community Cookout from HEB and performances by area student groups! They will have face painting, kids’ activities, and great door prizes. Food and drink will be available and the beautiful ABC indoor playspace will be open. Camp Doublecreek Open House

Details: Looking for fun, active summer camp options? Check out Camp Doublecreek, which features horseback riding, all kinds of sports, miniature golf, swimming, baby animals, arts and crafts, archery, tennis, tumbling, a playscape, and many other games and activities for children ages 4-14.

Snapology Austin Summer Camp Open House

Starry Nights at Girlstart

Details: Don't miss Starry Nights! March Theme: Mayan Skies Star Shows. Girlstart’s STEM Studio and Mini-Planetarium is a unique space for families to explore astronomy! Starry Nights are held the first Thursday of every month (except January, June, July, and August), with each month featuring a new astronomy experience and related hands-on activities. All ages are welcome to stop by any time between 5:30pm and 7:00pm. RSVP is recommended, however it is not required, to participate. Reminder: Chaperones are required. Adults must stay with their children throughout the event. Hands-on activities on March 5th include:

  • Dissect a seed as you discover Mayan crop cultivation techniques

  • Program robots to make their way to the top of the Mayan pyramid

  • Make a device to shoot a ball through a hoop on a Mayan ceremonial ball court

  • Engineer a drag racing spool and learn about Ewy Rosqvist, the first female to participate in and win the Argentine Grand Prix

Explore UT

Details: Held annually at UT Austin, Explore UT aims to inform students, parents, teachers, and community members from across the state about the importance of the public research institution and higher education in Texas. The day-long event invites Texans of all ages to experience robust research, hands-on demonstrations and experiments, and participate in the richness of the university's scholarship and knowledge. Explore UT seeks to broaden the horizons of students in Texas and motivate them toward achieving higher education after high school. It seeks to help parents and teachers encourage the excitement of learning and discovery, and welcomes alumni to reconnect with the institution that prepared them for their careers. Domain Northside Spring Family Film Series

Details: Mark your calendars! Domain NORTHSIDE is hosting a family-friendly movie series which kicks off Saturday, March 7 on the NORTHSIDE lawn. All screenings will start at 6pm and are free and open to the public. All you need are chairs and blankets!

Career Fair for the Future

Details: For high school and college students. As advancing technologies reshape our lives, what new jobs will emerge? Second Saturdays are for Families: Art Free-For-All

Details: Free and open to everyone! Get to know all The Contemporary has to offer during this free, family-friendly open house. Enjoy hands-on Art School demonstrations, check out new sculptures on the grounds, see live performances by Sky Candy aerialists, and make art to take home. This event will have collaborative artmaking and food trailers too, so bring the family and spend the day! Reserve a free ticket and be entered to win a prize package including a free summer class at the Art School and a one-year membership to The Contemporary Austin! Creative Action Color Squad Community Paint Day

Details: Join Creative Action for Community Paint Day. Color Squad is a collective of teen artists that design and implement public art that addresses a need in the community. The group was voted Best Muralist in Austin in 2019 in the Austin Chronicle’s “Best Of” poll. Past projects have included a prominent community mural in East Austin in partnership with Six Square and Cap Metro, a large-scale mural at the Central Texas Food Bank, an art installation at People’s Community Clinic, a community mural in Lott Pocket Park in partnership with GirlForward Austin, and the restoration of the iconic “Austin Postcard Mural” in South Austin.

ABC Kite Fest

Details: Held each year in March, the ABC Kite Fest is one of Austin’s most beloved, family-friendly traditions. ABC Kite Fest boasts day-long activities for all ages, including the traditional kite flying contest and showcase, a fun run and MossFest, and a children’s music concert. Soar into spring and join thousands of Austinites for a free, all-day event filled with kite making, flying, and gazing.

Sherwood Forest Faire

Details: Sherwood Forest Faire is a locally owned medieval-style village nestled in the Lost Pines section of Central Texas. Over 100 permanent buildings on 25 acres, including stages, pubs, merchant shoppes, wedding venues, a complete castle, and more. During Robin Hood’s Spring Faire, there are over 150 shows per day by more than 40 different stage acts: full contact jousting, falconry, fire juggling, knife throwing, 10+ live bands, comedy, sword fighting, and a castle siege. Shows for kids, adults, and both!

Bosom Buddies: Lactation Support Group

Details: Weekly lactation support group. Bring your infant under 12 months of age to Bosom Buddies, a weekly peer-to-peer group that’s facilitated by an IBCLC at the Breastfeeding Success Company’s South Austin clinic. A scale is available for you to weigh your baby or do your own weighed feeding. This group is open to families who provide breastmilk in a number of ways - you do not have to be exclusively breastfeeding at the breast to attend. This group is open to all, not just Breastfeeding Success Company clients. Please note: While happy to discuss common concerns, more complex issues will require a separate IBCLC visit. There is a suggested donation of $5 per week.

Science Mill Homeschool Day: Careers in Math & Art

Details: Explore careers that combine art and mathematics at Homeschool Day, March 5! Make some amazing math-based art to display at home, and see how art can be a hands-on tool for exploring mathematical concepts, including 3D shapes, fractal patterns and the formula for Pi. There will be a guest speaker, hands-on activities (Cutting Pi, Fractal Suncatchers, and Hidden Equation Art), and learning labs by grade-level (additional fee).

Details: Looking for a cool co-working space with childcare? A fun place to meet up for playdates with your kids? A place to get your fitness on? Or maybe get your happy hour on? All this and more is available at The Hive. Feel free to come sans kiddos OR reserve a spot in the supervised childcare area for only $10/hr. Productivity here we come! There is a beautiful cafe area and lounge where any and all are welcome to visit or work at no charge. The Hive hosts a wide variety of events monthly. Asian American Teen Career Day

Details: The Asian American Resource Center (AARC) invites 9th-12th grade students (ages 14-18) to go beyond the traditional and explore diverse career paths at the Inaugural Asian American Teen Career Day Conference. Many students preparing for college are familiar with traditional career paths such as doctors, lawyers, and engineers. In particular for Asian American youth that are dealing with the “model minority” stereotype, there are often pressures to enter these highly skilled careers. The AARC Teen Career Day will provide high school students an opportunity to explore diverse career paths from local Asian American professionals that may better fit their interests, skills, and passions. Students will participate in panel discussions, career presentations, and learn about getting ready for college. By creating a space to inform, learn, and educate on the vast career fields such as public service, education, creatives, and more, the AARC hopes to empower students to be prepared to navigate college and find their right career path.

The Willow Postpartum Group - Austin Doula Care & Lillian June Wellness

Details: A Willow Tree is rooted deep into the ground while having the flexibility to move and shift as the wind requires. Motherhood demands flexibility and grounding, just like a Willow Tree. Join Kim, Chelsea (Austin Doula Care), and Ashley Heisler of Lillian June Wellness, for this 6 week series that dives deep into your postpartum journey. In this series they will explore what it means to go from Maiden to Mother, how to Meditate like a Mother, and finally how to Move and Eat like Mother. Details: This class is for personal trainers, moms, dads, babysitters, caregivers, or anyone that wants to be a lifesaver. This class is for teens and older. Come have fun and learn to save a life!

Drama-Free Discipline – Late Spring 2020

Details: Classes will be held online through a web platform so no need to fight Austin traffic! Enjoy learning in your own home! Join in for a series of sessions as you work through the No-Drama Discipline Workbook by Siegel & Bryson. The goal is simple: to discipline less on autopilot by developing strategies to manage and reduce drama in your interactions with your kids. The stories and exercises in the workbook will help you think more deeply about the way you communicate with your kids and provide opportunities for peaceful and nurturing conflict resolution. Together, you will learn how to:

  • Develop clear and consistent strategies for responding to misbehavior.

  • Move from tantrum to tranquility by connecting and calming.

  • Apply the three “Brain C’s” and understand how neuroscience impacts your disciplinary decisions.

  • Practice tips to remain firm and consistent in your discipline, while communicating with warmth, love, respect, and compassion.

  • Teach your child life lessons on how to relate to others, how to handle difficult situations, and how to control emotions and impulses.

  • Engage with the interactive format, journaling to integrate ideas into your parenting approach.

Museum Exhibits

Thinkery Community Night!

Details: MAKE and DO together at Community Night! Every Wednesday, Thinkery stays open late for families to discover new ideas and learn together. Enjoy the exhibits and educational programs facilitated by staff.

  • Wednesday, March 4th Community Night Spotlight: Women in STEAM

    • During Community Night Spotlight evenings, Thinkery shines a light on a unique aspect of the rich diversity that makes Austin such an amazing place to live, play, and learn with educational activities facilitated by staff and special community presenters. On March 4, join in for an empowering evening that highlights female trailblazers, careers in STEAM, and the many contributions women have made in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. The event will feature hands-on activities and presentations from a variety of community partners. Learn how women are changing the game throughout Central Texas—and the world!

Cost: Admission to Thinkery is FREE on Community Nights, but donations are welcome! There is no pre-registration for admission. In order to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit for all guests, Thinkery has a set number of visitors that can be allowed into the museum at any one time. Guests will be admitted on a first-come, first served basis.

Neill-Cochran House Museum: Sunday Fundays

Details: One Sunday out of the month, the Neill-Cochran House Museum opens its doors to feature hands-on activities, scavenger hunts, self-paced tours, and (weather permitting) lawn games with space to picnic in the shade. March 15th activity: Old Time Texas Survey (Mapmaking): Before Google Maps, how did early Texans become familiar with the strange, new land they occupied? Math! Join in with Museum staff and MathHappens as they lead hands-on demonstrations of classic land survey techniques that would have been used to map out Texas. Chains and wheels will be provided, as well as historical context for the role the General Land Office played in shaping the future of our state. Then, measure and decorate your land grant on the grounds of the museum!

Kingdom Arts: Citywide Art Show for Teen Anime, Manga, and Video Game Enthusiasts

Details: Presented by the Asian American Resource Center, experience the fantasy worlds of anime, manga, and video games with a new exhibit featuring work from teen artists that celebrates Asian pop culture genres. Central Texas-area middle and high school students explore new possibilities with their imaginative creations, which include cosplay photography, product design, drawings, paintings, digital prints, fiber art, and metal sculpture work. The collection’s title, Kingdom Arts, pays homage to the groundbreaking video game series, Kingdom Hearts, which combines storylines of famous Disney characters with protagonists from Final Fantasy, a popular Japanese video game series from Square-Enix. The exhibit features pieces from artists 12 to 18 years old.

The Illusionists - Live From Broadway

Disney’s Alladin | Broadway in Austin

Details: Discover a whole new world at Disney’s ALADDIN, the hit Broadway musical. The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Details: The Very Hungry Caterpillar and his menagerie of animal friends have arrived at ZACH! Little ones will go wide-eyed with excitement as they recite along to their favorite Eric Carle classics like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, 10 Little Rubber Ducks, and The Very Lonely Firefly. Each story is brought to life by an array of faithfully recreated puppets that will enchant and engage both adults and children as they leap off the page and onto the stage. Age recommendation: 12 months and up. Run time: 50 minutes with no intermission.
