Happy February! Looking for some fun stuff to do in Austin with the kiddos? Enriched Family's February 2020 Activities List has you covered! As always, our monthly roundup of kids’ and family activities focuses on educational, cultural, and artistic delights in our community, with a special emphasis on both free and fee-based events. So get out there and enjoy some family exploration! A quick list of some of the free events this month include a couple of summer camp fairs; the Austin Allies Fest; Black History Month Kid’s Day; Bullock Museum Homeschool Day; Creative Action Friend Fest; Girl Day at UT; I Love Idiomas so Much! Festival; DSACT-Rise School of Austin Resource Fair for the Young Child; Laguna Gloria’s Second Saturdays are for Families; Starry Nights at Girlstart; UMLAUF Family Day; and a workshop for parents on talking to children about racial issues and anti-racism. Fee-based activities include faerie tea parties; Baby Day at The Thinkery; a variety of craft and sewing workshops for kids and adults at Beehive Craft Studio; a parent-child movement and music class at Creative Action (pay as you can); infant massage classes offered by Baby Strokes; family-friendly events at The Hive; a variety of fun activities at Toybrary Austin; and a Nurtured Heart Approach training for parents. Finally, you could also enjoy a kid-friendly museum opening or performance at a number of venues around town. As always, this list is not exhaustive, but includes a sampling of events and activities that caught my eye that I wanted to highlight. Summer Camp Fairs

Yes, parents, it is that time of year again — time to think about camps. It pays to get the camp schedules figured out early — and not just for peace of mind. Many camps offer early bird registration specials in January and February and most of the popular camps fill up quickly. As your extra set of qualified hands, I have included two camp fairs below to help you working parents out!

HappiFamli Camp Fair

Details: The HappiFamli Camp Fair is a free, annual event for families. Bring the whole family down to check out over 50 great summer camp options, including title sponsors Mad Science, Kids Acting, Cordovan Art School, Rio Vista Farms, and Sherwood Forest Summer Camp. Learn about and sign up for all kinds of summer programs (as well as Spring Break camps) all over the Austin area and beyond. The Camp Fair will include a wide variety of camps from art to sports, science to horses, sleep-away to day camps, and so much more. There is something for every kid, ages 4-18. There will also be free, fun activities for the kids throughout the fair, as well as prizes and giveaways from vendors.

Austin Family Magazine Summer Camp Fair

Details: Join in for Austin Family Magazine’s 22nd Annual Summer Camp Fair. Bring your family and learn about area summer camps and spring break camps. There will be camp giveaways, entertainment, and the opportunity to meet with camps from all over state! Free!

Free Educational/Cultural/Fun Activities

Bosom Buddies: Lactation Support Group

Details: FREE, weekly lactation support group. Bring your infant under 12 months of age to Bosom Buddies, a weekly peer-to-peer group that’s facilitated by an IBCLC at the Breastfeeding Success Company’s South Austin clinic. A scale is available for you to weigh your baby or do your own weighed feeding. This group is open to families who provide breastmilk in a number of ways - you do not have to be exclusively breastfeeding at the breast to attend. This group is open to all, not just Breastfeeding Success Company clients. Please note: while happy to discuss common concerns, more complex issues will require a separate IBCLC visit.

Starry Nights at Girlstart

Details: Don't miss the first Starry Nights of the season! Theme: Ancient Chinese Legend Star Shows. Girlstart’s STEM Studio and Mini-Planetarium is a unique space for families to explore astronomy! Starry Nights are held the first Thursday of every month (except January, June, July, and August), with each month featuring a new astronomy experience and related hands-on activities. All ages are welcome to stop by any time between 5:30pm and 7:00pm. RSVP is recommended, however it is not required, to participate. Reminder: Chaperones are required. Adults must stay with their children throughout the event. Hands-on activities on February 6th include:

  • Explore circuitry and origami as you make a light up firefly

  • Discover white tiger genetics through Punnett squares

  • Design a flying Chinese dragonfly toy

  • Engineer a chopstick catapult for National Chopstick Day!

Creative Action Friend Fest

Details: Join Creative Action for a family-friendly celebration of friendship with interactive fun for kids and adults. Enjoy live music by Seu Jacinto, crafts (including creative reuse activities), cookie decorating, a special friendship parade, and Creative Action Summer Camp information & discounts. The event is FREE for the whole family. This event is held at Central Market (N. Lamar) annually to celebrate the importance of friendship and being a courageous ally.

DSACT-Rise School of Austin Resource Fair for the Young Child

Details: Join DSACT (Down Syndrome Association of Texas) and The Rise School of Austin for their second annual resource fair! Come learn from local providers, including RED Arena, Joshua's Stage, VELA Families, Any Baby Can, and so many more! They will have snacks and activities to keep the whole family happy! Free.

Second Saturdays are for Families: Wobbly Weebels

Details: Can you make a sculpture that will sway, bob, and dip, but never falls over? Create a gravity-defying work of art inspired by a group of bulbous sculptures by artist Juan Muñoz. The Contemporary Austin offers free, monthly hands-on art-making activities, recommended for ages 2–11.

UMLAUF Family Day

Details: Bring your whole family and enjoy a full day of fun activities. This event is free and open to the public. The monthly Family Days are designed for families and friends to explore and create. On the second Sunday of each month, they feature a line-up of activities for families to enjoy together.

Bullock Museum Homeschool Day

Details: Enjoy a FREE day full of discovery and learning at the Bullock Museum reserved specifically for homeschool families. Participate in hands-on activities and special classes all about cowboys and space inspired by Texas history. Museum admission is free for homeschool families on this date and school group rates for films in the IMAX® Theatre and Texas Spirit Theatre are available from 9am-5pm.

Available Classes:

  • Hands-on classes taught by museum educators and partner organizations give your students an opportunity to spend more time exploring topics that relate to STEM learning. By popular demand, reserve a seat in a class in advance for a small fee. Space is limited in each class and reservations are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To allow as many students as possible access to these unique learning opportunities, they ask that you choose only one class for your student or students to attend. Austin Allies Fest

Details: It's Austin Allies’ 3rd Birthday and they are celebrating with a super fun, family-friendly event and fundraiser! Join in for Carnival Games (tickets available at the event), Talent Show, Silent Auction, Face Painting, Swag Bags, Playscapes, Food/Full Bar for purchase, and more! The event is free to attend; however, there are a limited number of VIP tickets available for just $30 per family (up to 6 people). Details: Biliteracy Club Communities of Austin (BoCCA), in collaboration with Think Bilingual Austin, presents this free family event that celebrates a LOVE for languages and appreciation for cultural diversity in our community. Brave Schools Parent Workshop by Creative Action: Talking to Your Child About Race

Details: This parent workshop will explore the importance of talking about race with young people as an anti-racist strategy. Creative Action will discuss why it is important to normalize talking about race and offer ideas about how to begin the conversation. Girl Day at UT Austin

Details: Students and their parents or educators are invited to UT for an afternoon of hands-on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fun. UT’s national award winning Girl Day, presented by the Women in Engineering Program (WEP), gives elementary and middle school students a chance to explore STEM through grade-appropriate, hands-on activities hosted by volunteer scientists, engineers, and STEM enthusiasts from over 160 student organizations, research centers, corporate partners, and community organizations. Both girls and boys are welcome! Girl Day at UT Austin is a free event for K-8 students held on the Cockrell School of Engineering and Natural Sciences complexes on The University of Texas at Austin campus. Over 8,000 students are expected to participate in over 150 free-flowing hands-on activities and demonstrations hosted by volunteers, student organizations, corporate partners, and community organizations.

Details: At the Science Mill’s Homeschool Day, use your engineering skills to take wild ideas from design to reality: A roller coaster for marbles! A maze for robots! Catapults that play catch! Baby Day at The Thinkery

Details: Baby Day is the only statewide celebration of the first three years of life, a day acknowledging and celebrating this incredible period! Baby Day will host specialized activities that promote bonding and delight and foster early brain development at locations across the state of Texas for families and caretakers with very young children. Baby Day activities at The Thinkery is tailored for infants and toddlers from ages 0-3 and range from infant yoga to music classes to dancing, curated art, story time, and more.

Faerie Tea Parties at Zilker Botanical Garden

Details: Faeries are landing at the Zilker Botanical Garden! Let’s welcome them to the Garden and get prepared for the joys of springtime. Please join in for the 2020 Faerie Tea Parties dressed in your faerie best, where you can take home a plant to invite faeries into your own garden, enjoy refreshments with friends, and look for signs of faerie landings throughout the Garden! February Creative Action Parent and Child Music & Movement Class

Details: Dance, sing, and play with your family at Creative Action. Music & Movement classes are active and are designed to inspire creativity, encourage physical and emotional development, and support bonding and connection for parents and children. Singing, rhythm making, instrument playing, and music of all genres is explored throughout the class. Classes include multi-sensory play and bring out the individual creativity of both parent and child. Space is limited, classes are pay-what-you-can.

Infant Massage Classes by Baby Strokes

Details: Private and weekly infant massage group classes offered at Precision Chiropractic ATX. Class rates include handouts and a bottle of massage oil. Wear comfy clothes, bring your yoga mat, a towel or blanket, diaper bag and baby essentials and your baby or favorite doll.

Storybook Tea Party

Creative Action Color Squad Exhibit Opening

Details: Voted “BEST MURALIST” in the 2019 Austin Chronicle‘s Readers Poll, Color Squad will debut a collective exhibit titled “SUR/REAL.” Meet the 18 teen artists included in the exhibition and hear about their process and inspirations.

Courage to Be: The Saheli Story

Details: Courage to Be: An Evening Celebrating Saheli. Celebrate the 28th anniversary of Saheli, the first organization in the South to serve Asian families impacted by domestic violence. Enjoy stories from the early members of Saheli and explore the archival exhibition, Courage To Be: The Saheli Story, on display through April 2020. Light snacks and refreshments provided. The event is presented by the Asian American Resource Center, Austin History Center, and Asian Family Support Services of Austin (AFSSA).

Kingdom Arts: Citywide Art Show for Teen Anime, Manga, and Video Game Enthusiasts

Details: Presented by the Asian American Resource Center, experience the fantasy worlds of anime, manga, and video games with a new exhibit featuring work from teen artists that celebrates Asian pop culture genres. Central Texas-area middle and high school students explore new possibilities with their imaginative creations, which include cosplay photography, product design, drawings, paintings, digital prints, fiber art, and metal sculpture work. The collection’s title, Kingdom Arts, pays homage to the groundbreaking video game series, Kingdom Hearts, which combines storylines of famous Disney characters with protagonists from Final Fantasy, a popular Japanese video game series from Square-Enix. The exhibit features pieces from artists 12 to 18 years old.

Theatre and other Performances 

SaulPaul’s Alien Adventure

Details: An alien comes to earth and makes an unexpected friend. What happens next? Come see this inspiring production featuring sights, sounds and dance moves as the two unexpected friends learn about life while they journey on an adventure. Music by SaulPaul. Story by SaulPaul and Bianca Neal. SaulPaul is a Grammy-nominated artist who has entertained and inspired audiences at events and venues across the world: TED Talks, Google HQ, the last five Super Bowls, and the Kennedy Center. In addition, SaulPaul founded ReRoute Outreach, a non-profit organization which helps at-risk and underprivileged youth discover and develop their artistic and entrepreneurial skill sets.

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live

Details: Following the hugely successful “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live: King for a Day” tour that traveled to more than 50 neighborhoods in 2019, Daniel Tiger and all his friends from the beloved Emmy Award-winning PBS KIDS television series are hopping back aboard Trolley for Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live: Neighbor Day. All ages.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Details: The Very Hungry Caterpillar and his menagerie of animal friends have arrived at ZACH! Little ones will go wide-eyed with excitement as they recite along to their favorite Eric Carle classics like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, 10 Little Rubber Ducks, and The Very Lonely Firefly. Each story is brought to life by an array of faithfully recreated puppets that will enchant and engage both adults and children as they leap off the page and onto the stage. Age recommendation: 3 and up.

When: Through March 14, 2020 | Weekends; mostly matinee performances.
